Synopsis

Roy is sitting by the river side, and enjoying his silence, when he sees an angry Anokhi walking up to him and talking in Bengali, furious, that he made her photos while she was offering her rituals. Upon finding out that he had not made any photos, she is even more furious, why he didn’t, she believes those photos could come so well, while she was offering her rituals. Roy, is amazed, to feel her attitudes, when not having made any photos, wondering, what would happen if he had made some.

They have a gentle introduction; he is an Indian born but living in Europe over 24 years and, an artist and photographer and filmmaker, whereas, she is a model and actress. Roy, clears up saying that he is more of an art filmmaker, making films for festivals and not the traditional commercial filmmaker. And, that he has to work 2 jobs to be able to invest for his passions for filmmaking. Anokhi, seems to have met the first of his kind of man, who works 2 jobs, just to be able to invest in his passion for art films. As he starts to leave, saying he will have to travel later same day, she asks him what was a man like him doing there, by the riverside, anyways. He asks her, what she means a man like him, and she says he seems to be someone not from the city, and, a man who would seem to hangout in malls and luxury lounge and alike. He smiles off, saying, perhaps he was waiting to meet her and, asks if she can show him some places, and he has some time and she could discover more about a man like him who looks luxury yet humble to be by the river side. She agrees only on a condition if he behaves, as she feels he is a fast guy and she is just a simple woman.

She offers to have some traditional street food as they hangout, and he can’t have it as its too spicy, and she offers him water, he seems concerned about if its RO water or just regular. She laughs, saying, what a man he is who can’t take a simple snack and has to be concerned even to drink water. He mentions he does not have spicy foods, and would prefer just some simple hangout. She decides to take him to Park Street, which is, and was, once known to be the center of attractions and hangouts for people of Calcutta.

While in Park street, she asks if he knows how the city got its name and she jokingly says when the British arrived, they asked the farmer what’s the name of the city, and perhaps the farmer didn’t understand and assumed he is a buyer, who wanted to know when the crops were cut, and the farmer said kal-kata ( meaning was cut yesterday ) thus, the city got its name as Calcutta and now Kolkata. And those british, who disguised as buyer(s) become rulers to the state and gradually rest of India. Roy enjoys her company, often trying to hug her and touch her, while, she skilfully and smartly signals him to keep his hands to him. They have good vibes for sure, blending a bit of gentle romance and flirting.

They try some more street snacks such as egg roll and coconut water, later on she decides to take him to Victoria Memorial, sharing some brief insights about the place and its history, but, more talkative with her own culture and heritage. As they hangout together, he continues with his elegance and charm for romancing with her and she gives him flirting replies and at the same time, mentions, he is a fast guy whereas, she is just a simple woman, well experienced not to jump to romance with a NRI, and that too their first hours of a meet up, which was suppose to be more a friendly hangout only.

Roy asks if that’s all about Kolkata and if Bongs are all about food and talks. And she is proud to say that Bongs are all about food, food, and more food and then celebrating their Durga puja once a year and many more delightful pujas all the year around and Saraswati puja been exciting especially since he said he is an artist and Goddess Saraswati is for education and arts. Roy is enjoying her talks and togetherness. And in the meantime, wants to know what more she will explore together with him. She says he can’t eat much, he has not much time, because a real Bengali meal is lots of different variety of food which is best presented during jamai-shosthy. When the daughter’s husband is invited and the finest and the largest perhaps cuisine is offered as rituals. But she can still take him for the Kolkata Chinese food and he immediacy refused saying that will be spicy, so she decides to take him to the momo-wali-gali. Where they serve the best of the best momos.

While having momos, Roy seems to be enjoying her company, and living the moment at best, and in all this, he mentions that she is his first Indian and that too a Bengali woman in saree, out on a date like feeling with him. Which she doesn’t want to believe, but when he says that he comes from a humble family and back his times, having a girl friend was more of a luxury, she kinda takes his say and feeling proud to be that first in his life, while teasing him that usually men go for European women and he seems to crave for Indian women in saree, whereas men seem to like women in short western dresses. He for sure is some crazy and stylish Indian.

Roy says she is a lovely humorous woman, yet with anger at the tip of her nose. He remembers that writing on the bus: aapnaar bebohar, aapnar, porichoi, having said that she laughs out loud, saying which era he belongs to, those seems to be the go gone days. He says he belongs to the era of art and art is here to stay for ever. She asks him, what is his idea of Calcutta and Bengalis, and he says, its all about Rabindra sangeet, literature, movies and for sure lots of food and lots of chit chats as “addaaa”. They both laugh and that’s when Roy says, she has still not offered him that traditional Bengali snack especially while chit-chats and hangouts, she seems confused and that’s when he says, Caaa Singara. She seems to like his wit and offers to take him to a special place for the ek cup Caa aar Singara for their (addaa) chit-chats and hangout.

He enjoys his cup of Caa and Singara, while she looks at him and wants to know if finally he has had his day. To which, he seems pleased and wants to have more Chaa. While they both gently and lovingly looking at each other. That’s when she asks him again, what was he doing by the river side. And he replies, with an emotion, that, his father had passed away in Kolkata and his ashes were immersed in the Ganges. So whenever he visits the city, he tries to go there, as a gratitude to Universe, and enjoy a moment of silence, and remembers all the goodness times with his father. Enjoying the breeze, as blessings and living the moment at its best.

She is speechless, and in lost of words and emotions … she greets him closely, he is as stylish and with looks of luxury lifestyle, yet, a man with emotions within. She would love to meet him again and invites him over, perhaps some day, he can come during the Pujas, so that she can show him around her city, and share more of her rich cultural heritage and traditions.
